Design that pays for itself

There is a version of this industry where design is a line item. A logo here, a landing page there, an invoice at the end. We have never been interested in that version.

When Stanbic Bank asked us to help carry their digitisation agenda, nobody framed it as a design project. It was a business problem wearing a design problem's clothes: products people did not use, processes that leaked money, and a story customers had not heard yet. We spent a year inside it. The work touched interfaces, internal tooling, campaigns, event branding and a notification service we engineered from scratch.

The results were countable. More than $200M in new revenue influenced. Over $400K in costs removed. Fifty thousand new customers. Fifteen shipped products. Two international awards, which were nice, but the first four numbers are the point.

The lesson we keep relearning: aesthetics are not the opposite of performance, they are one of its levers. A screen that people trust gets used. A campaign with a clear voice gets remembered. A process that flows saves real money every single day it runs. Taste opens the door; telemetry proves what walked through it.

So we measure. Before, during, after. If a piece of work cannot say what it changed, we treat that as a design flaw, and we fix it like one.

That is what we mean when we say the work is for the client and the user, never for ourselves. Awards age. Outcomes compound. — with Marcel.
