The power of restraint in brand systems
Every brand wants to be unmissable. The usual instinct is addition: more colors, more type styles, more effects. Our experience points the other way.
When we built the identity for VYSN Labs, the temptation was everywhere. A tech lab positioning itself around the African future could justify almost any visual maximalism. Instead the system came down to a retina-inspired mark, a black that means business, and two voltages of color used sparingly enough that they never stop feeling electric.
Restraint is not minimalism for its own sake. It is a bet on repetition. A brand with one strong rule, applied everywhere without exception, out-communicates a brand with ten flexible guidelines. People do not memorize guidelines. They memorize the thing you refused to compromise on.
The test we use in the studio is simple: remove the logo. If the layout, the color discipline and the voice still identify the brand, the system works. If everything depends on the logo being present, there is no system, only a signature on loan.
This is also why our own site keeps its work in grayscale until you pay attention to it. One rule, kept absolutely. The color arrives when it means something.
Say less. Keep the promise every time. That is the whole trick. — with Marcel.
